ANSWERS

What is PTTLS?

PTLLS stands for 'Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector' and is now an essential initial qualification if you want to work within the UK Lifelong Learning Sector.

What is the Lifelong Learning Sector?

The Lifelong Learning Sector covers the following types of UK institutions: community learning and development centres; further education colleges; probation services; organisations where work-based learning takes place.

How do I get my PTTLS qualification?

Through SGI, PTLLS is in essence an add-on to the Trinity Cert TESOL (or CELTA). We assess the final 2000 – 3000 word written assignment, which is then sent to be moderated by Trinity College London. All being well, Trinity College London will then issue a successful completion letter stating that PTLLS requirements have been met and that the candidate can now apply for suitable work in the lifelong learning sector.

What does the PTTLS add-on involve?

You, the trainee, are sent one on-line workbook which covers all the relevant areas of study. Once you have completed the workbook and have completed all workbook tasks you would then be ready to do the final 2000-3000 written assignment. As previously mentioned, once completed, the assignment is internally assessed and then externally moderated by Trinity College London.

When can I start the course and how do I apply?

You can start the SGI PTLLS distance learning course at any time. There are two ways of getting started.
1) Immediately following successful completion of an SGI Cert TESOL course. This is the SGI Cert TESOL (PTLLS add-on ). Apply via the ‘Certificate’ application form and say ‘yes’ to the ‘PTLLS add-on’ in the application form
2) At any time as a stand alone top-up course following an earlier completion of a Trinity Cert TESOL (or CELTA) course. This is the PTLLS stand alone top-up: Apply via the ‘PTLLS ’ application form.

Can you tell me more about the Workbook?

The workbook will cover the following necessary areas of focus for candidates:

  • Review their own role and responsibilities, and the boundaries of their role, as teachers within the Lifelong Learning Sector ( LLS)
  • Summarize current legislative requirements as they apply to teachers within the LLS
  • Review codes of practice relevant to ESOL teachers within the LLS
  • Review those points of referral available in the sector in order to meet the potential needs of their learners
  • Evaluate a range of ways to embed the functional skills of numeracy and ICT within ESOL programmes

Wherever possible, sections within the workbook will have exercises/activities to help make the content more stimulating and memorable. These exercises/activities include: reflecting on a given point, giving an opinion, matching/completion exercises, reading for both information and preparation and analysis of given information.
The written assignment is of course based on the content you deal with within the workbook.

How long do I have to do the Workbook?

The workbook can realistically be completed in one week and then a further week for the written assignment. So the course can be completed in two weeks. As with all our distance learning courses, the great thing about the SGI PTLLS course is that you can work at your own pace. With this in mind, candidates have a one month time frame in which to complete the course.

^ up

Who can take the course?

The course is open to native and non-native speakers of English who have successfully completed the Trinity College London TESOL certificate (or CELTA).

^ up

How widely and well-recognised is PTLLS?

The PTLLS is now established as a must-have qualification for new English language teachers wishing to work within the UK lifelong learning sector.

^ up

Isn’t this a very isolated way of studying?

It could be, but you are just an email or telephone call away from YOUR ASSIGNED COURSE TUTOR whom you can contact at any time during the working week.

^ up

Do I have to come to the UK?

There is no need to come to the UK on this programme. The entire programme, including the final assignment, can be done by distance learning.

Is PTLLS for me?

The Saint George International PTLLS course (Trinity Cert TESOL add-on) is particularly suitable for:

  • Teachers who have a specific interest in teaching within the UK Lifelong Learning Sector.
  • Teachers who work abroad or in the UK and who want or need to continue working while doing the PTLLS
  • Teachers abroad or in the UK who do not have access to other types of courses such as an intensive or part-time evening course.
  • Teachers who would like to work from home and do not want or feel a need to do a course within a traditional "face to face" format.
  • Teachers who would appreciate a degree of flexibility with regard to course completion.
  • British (or EU European) teachers who are currently teaching overseas and are considering returning to the UK to teach.

Is PTLLS the only qualification I need to work in the Lifelong Learning sector?

No it isn’t, but PTLLS is an important first step in that it enables you to work in this sector. If you are a new teacher in this sector, on the basis of having the Trinity Cert TESOL and the PTLLS add-on, then you would need to complete a full qualification, the Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (DTLLS), within five years of when you begin to teach in the sector. Plenty of time!
