St George International, providers of quality teacher training since 1993, proudly presents a series of Teacher Development Workshops for 2011

The SGI CPD Club is for English Language Teachers who would like to develop new skills and share ideas on best practices and techniques for the classroom. Sessions will be led by senior teacher trainer Barney Sandell, and will be informal, interactive and insightful.

When: 6.30-7pm – snacks and reflection on the previous session 7-8pm – the workshop

How much: £5 per workshop (£3 for ex-SGI trainees) £25 for all 8 sessions and get a free CPD file (£15 for ex-SGI trainees)

The Spring-Summer Sessions

Tuesday 8th March 6.30pm – 8.00pm Making Conversation Classes Work Conversation classes, an easy option or poisoned chalice? This session explores how best to plan speaking lessons to make them fun, focused and effective, discussing the idea of speaking sub-skills and communicative needs.

Tuesday 5th April 6.30pm – 8.00pm Opening Doors for the Developing Teacher Whether you’re a ‘digital native’ or an email snail, there are plenty of simple and user-friendly online professional development opportunities worth exploring. Discover a new world!

Tuesday 3rd May 6.30pm – 8.00pm Writing – The Forgotten Skill The type of lesson most teachers are least confident about, writing is stuck in ESP purgatory. It shouldn’t be! Discover some easy ways to run engaging, student-centred and communicative General English writing classes.

Tuesday 7th June 6.30pm – 8.00pm Using ICT Tools and Resources in Class A great session for both the technologically aware and ignorant, come and play with some simple and fun tools and establish some useful tips on how to use them in lessons. A great resource for freshening up your classes.

The Autumn-Winter Series

Tuesday 13th Sept 6.30pm – 8.00pm Learning to Love One-One One-One lessons often get a bad press: intense and intensive with learners who are both demanding and frustratingly vague. Come and learn how one-one lessons can be fun yet focused, challenging yet fulfilling.

Tuesday 11th Oct 6.30pm – 8.00pm Integrating ICT into Courses Welcome to the wonderful world of wikis, webquests, blogs and e-projects. Discover how really user-friendly online resources can give a sense of continuity and longer term achievement to your courses.

Tuesday 15th Nov 6.30pm – 8.00pm The Learner: Individual, Idiosyncratic and Independent The slippery terms of a learner’s needs, wants and learning styles are uncovered as are relatively easy ways of establishing these. Plus some thoughts on how to achieve that holy grail of learner autonomy.

Tuesday 6th Dec 6.30pm – 8.00pm Business English for the Uninitiated For those of us who got into teaching either to avoid getting a proper job or sullying ourselves with dirty capitalism, teaching Business English can be an uncomfortable experience. Discover some ideas on how to make it work while keeping your soul intact.

Attend our workshops and you will become a more reflective teacher: better at understanding what your learners need, how to plan and teach a variety of lesson types and more aware of how ICT resources can help you in your teaching.

To ensure a participative and personalised atmosphere each workshop will have a maximum of 15 participants. SGI specialises in distance teacher training courses and runs year round Speaking Skills, Business English and One-One lessons.
