I took the TESOL course in January 2012 and have been working at SGI Moscow ever since. I enrolled on the course at SGI London with the idea of changing career, but I only had basic teaching experience and relatively little knowledge of the world of teaching English. However, from the very first few lessons I realised I was in incredibly capable hands. I quickly developed an enthusiasm for the course and for the nature of the job that I had never experienced in other lines of work or previous education.
I chose to do the part-time course as I needed my full-time job to fund living in London. I liked having the course spread out over three months as it gave me more time to develop and to mentally digest all that I was learning on the course. Even though it was part-time, it was incredibly intense; it was at times difficult to juggle with my other work commitments. However, it was such a rewarding and supportive experience that there were never times where I felt alone or that I was struggling. The teachers were everything you could hope for and more, and I made some great friends in my group.
At SGI Moscow I have been teaching a wide range of students, from very young children to business groups in leading companies, as well adults with many different incentives for learning English. I thoroughly enjoy my job and have met some wonderful people. I found the teaching practice on the course incredibly insightful and confidence-building, all necessary preparations for my job in the classroom!
The lessons and approaches I learnt during this course have been invaluable in my career as an English teacher. I still refer to the notes I made and tips I was given. I would recommend this course to anyone interested in TEFL because it enables you to develop a strong platform on which you can build thereafter. You definitely get out what you put in, but if you’re up for the challenge, it can be incredibly worthwhile and fun along the way.
