So, here’s a timely free TEFL lesson plan for strong Upper Intermediate/ Advanced level English students. (There is also a Teacher sheet available for free download, too)
Reading Skills, vocabulary exercises, Written work, Roleplaying, lots of discussion questions, plus a written homework task should make this a thorough lesson for your learners.
Forgive me for stating the obvious, but just to mention that this lesson needs to be handled with a degree of sensitivity.
Especially important is the roleplay in Exercise 6. It is NOT intended to be a re-enactment of the actual phone call. This should be a ‘benefit of hindsight’ moment, where Ss instill some (needed) hospital protocol and perform a background check, so that the whole tragic affair could have been avoided. Talk through this point with Ss to prepare for this exercise, so that they clearly understand the aim of this roleplay.
Please let me know how you got on with it.
Tuesday 11th December: Update/Revision
Re Discussion question ‘c’
The Radio station has said that they will donate all profits for the rest of the year to a fund for Jacintha’s children. A minimum of 500,000 Aus dollars will be donated.
Re Discussion question ‘b’
NB: Use according to your own personal judgement, if you think appropriate.
If there is a lot of ill-feeling towards the presenters from your learners and no-one is mentioning the culpability of the producers or station bosses that authorised the broadcast, then maybe you might wish to use this video. Be careful, it could be harrowing stuff for some. Make sure your learners are up to it in your best judgement. However, it does clearly illustrate that there are no winners, only losers in this terrible case….
